Boasting of its multilingual courses and open-ended orientation, the current School of Foreign Languages of CUPL, was founded in June, 2002 from the preceding Department of Foreign Languages. Its history can be traced back to 1952 when it was called the Work Team of Foreign Languages, under CUPL’s Teaching and Research Section of Humanities and Sports. In 1979, the independent Section of Foreign Languages came into being, along with the resumption of college students’ enrollment. Thanks to CUPL’s wider expansion in scale, June, 1987 witnessed the emergence of Department of Foreign Language Teaching, which was later renamed as Department of Foreign Languages in September 1994. In June, 2002, it formally gained its current name.
At present, the school consists of 93 faculty members. Altogether, there are 11 professors, 33 associate professors and 38 lecturers; 24 are doctor’s degree holders; 77 hold degrees of master’s degree or higher, making up 93.9% of the total. Fifty-two teachers used to pursue academic studies abroad, occupying 63.4% of the total. It can be safely stated that the whole faculty features both stable membership and rational structuring in academic level and degree.
Under its wings, the school is divided into Department of Foreign Language Teaching for Non-Language Majors, Department of English, and Department of German. Respectively, these three departments are in charge of teaching non-language majors such languages as English, German, Japanese, Russian, French and Italian, teaching English and German majors at the undergraduate level, as well as training graduate students in Foreign Languages and Literatures, whose MA Program covers such disciplines as English Language and Literature, German Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, as well as French Language and Literature, with the first discipline selected as a key one in CUPL. At present, four academic and research centers are also in place, namely Research Center of College English for Non-Language Majors, Research Center of German Culture, Research Center of Legal Translation, and Research Center of Legal English Teaching and Test. Since its foundation, the school has made considerable progress in academic research by undertaking 8 research projects of national or ministry level; getting 266 books published, including those in translation, those in compilation and textbooks; organizing national and international conferences twice.
Under the guidance of the motto “assimilation of values from both East and West, balance of knowledge and virtues”, and the notion “open management and rigorous scholarship”, School of Foreign Languages has long been oriented to training its students into inter-disciplinary talented personnel of “Foreign Language plus Law”, equipped with a solid foundation in language and a well-knit structure of knowledge components, thus being well capable of cross-cultural communications. At present, there are 510 full-time undergraduates and 25 graduates. Concerning their patterns of training, English and German majors are expected to hold double Bachelor’s Degrees (English and Law, or German and Law) after 5 years of learning; Excellent German majors are entitled to free access to Master’s Degree of Law with the school’s recommendation. Given CUPL’s nationwide exemplary status in college English teaching reform, College English for non-English majors has adopted a comprehensive, Internet-based, and multi-dimensional mode of language teaching, considerably enhancing the students’ abilities to put English to use, which have been proven by their various successes in such important competitions as National Legal English Speech Competition, FTRP Cup National English Debating Competition, Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest, and Han Suyin Award for Young Translators. Besides, the school has made considerable efforts to organize such on-campus cultural activities as “Foreign Language Cultural Festival” and “On the Way”, thus much enriching students’ practical experience and cultural life.
By pooling educational resources from home and abroad, as well as running itself in an open-ended manner, the school has set up friendly cooperative relationships with various foreign universities and educational organizations one by one, and has constantly sought after better management mechanisms. Every year, students from the school are sent abroad for learning purposes. In turn, their foreign counterparts also pay short-term visits here to learn the Chinese culture.
For many years, the employment rate of graduates from the school has exceeded 95%, nine hundred of them with English and German majors being well active in such diverse fields as diplomacy, foreign trade and economic cooperation, education, legal affairs, and journalism. Earning good acclaims from their employers, they have made active contributions to the national economy and social development.
