Academic Areas
Xiamen University is currently recruiting talents who have distinguished themselves in a variety of academic disciplines including: the humanities and social sciences, the natural sciences, engineering and high-technology, medicine and other emerging research-orientated areas and multidisciplinary fields.
Positions Available & Essential Qualifications
Four types of professorships are currently available: distinguished professorships, full professorships, associate professorships, and assistant professorships.
A) Distinguished Professorships
Xiamen University is recruiting outstanding scholars and leading talents with international influence and academic reputation. Several types of distinguished professorships are available through both national and provincial-level programs. The national government’s “1000 Talents Plan” includes three types of programs: The Innovative Talent Program, the Foreign Expert Recruitment Program, and the 1000 Young Talents Program. The Yangtze River Scholar Program is a program under the National Ministry of Education and the Min River Scholar Program is a program under Provincial Education Department. Successful candidates of “1000 Young Talent Program” may be granted a full professorship or an associate professorship as well, depending on the candidate’s qualifications.
1) Applicants for a distinguished professorship under the Innovative Talent Program and the Foreign Expert Recruitment Program must:
a) Possess a doctoral degree in a relevant field of study;
b) Be a maximum of 55 years of age;
c) Hold a full professorship or its equivalent in a renowned overseas university or other research institution;
d) Meet all other requirements as may be stipulated by national or provincial government rules and regulations.
2) Applicants for a distinguished professorship under the Yangtze River Scholar Program, the Min River Scholar Program and Xiamen University Program must:
a) Possess a doctoral degree in a relevant field of study;
b) Hold an associate professorship or its equivalent in a renowned overseas university or other research institution, or a full professorship in a renowned university or other research institution in China;
c) Be a maximum of 45 years of age for positions in the natural sciences and engineering and technology, or a maximum of 50 years of age for positions in the humanities and social sciences (NOTE: Under certain circumstances applicants to the Yangtze River Scholar Program may be as old as 55 years of age);
d) Meet all other requirements as may be stipulated by national or provincial government rules and regulations.
3) Applicants for a distinguished professorship/full professorship/associate professorship under the 1000 Young Talents Plan must:
a) Hold outstanding qualifications limited to the natural sciences, engineering, technology or medicine;
b) Be a maximum of 40 years of age and own excellent overseas research experience;
c) Meet all other requirements as may be stipulated by national or provincial government rules and regulations;
d) Successful candidates will enjoy R&D funding supported by the national government ranging from 1 to 3 million yuan RMB, similar quantity of preparatory R&D funding supported by the university and government allowances totaling 1,125,000 yuan RMB.
B) Full Professorships
1) Applicants must possess a doctoral degree or the highest degree awarded in a relevant discipline;
2) Applicants must be 45 years old or younger.
C) Associate Professorships
1) Applicants must possess a doctoral degree or the highest degree awarded in a relevant discipline;
2) Applicants must be 40 years old or younger.
D) Assistant Professorships
1) Applicants must possess a doctoral degree or hold a post-doctoral position in a renowned overseas or domestic university or other research institution and should fulfill other requirements for assistant professorship;
2) Applicants must be 35 years old or younger.
3) Doctoral graduates as of the current academic year for assistant professorships may be accepted as Research-oriented Assistant Pofessors who are entitled to the salary and benefits of assistant professors (including housing or housing allowances). Research-oriented Assistant Professors will be required to join relevant post-doctoral institutes and conduct scientific research programs for two years, during which time teaching is not compulsory. Applicants for certain disciplines who are accepted directly as Assistant Professors should take the responsibilities of instruction and research as stipulated by the university.
