讀者Edmund問(wèn)：4月6日傍晚時(shí)分，英文應(yīng)該是on the evening of 6 April，還是in the evening of 6 April？
Edmund問(wèn)的是關(guān)于preposition的問(wèn)題。英文的preposition確實(shí)充滿陷阱，如果說(shuō)的是事物，還比較容易解釋。
譬如說(shuō)「襪子放在抽屜里」，大部分人很自然的說(shuō)︰
The socks are in the drawers.
相信說(shuō)the socks are on the drawers的人少之又少。既然是里面，當(dāng)然就是in。
但碰到一些抽象的東西，就不可以用中文思維來(lái)測(cè)度。3點(diǎn)鐘是at 3 o'clock。為什么不是on 3 o'clock？這就完全是習(xí)慣決定。也就是說(shuō)，如果有一日，說(shuō)on 3 o'clock的人數(shù)急增，我們就不會(huì)覺(jué)得這個(gè)說(shuō)法有什么不對(duì)。
Edmund提出兩個(gè)可能：on the evening和in the evening，按照我的經(jīng)驗(yàn)，還是后者較普遍，但事實(shí)上兩種說(shuō)法都可聽(tīng)到。
